Dumpster Rental in Durham, NC

NC-157 runs south out of our yard and becomes the Guess Road corridor straight into north Durham. It is one of the easiest runs we make — roughly 20 miles and under half an hour to downtown, less to the north side of the city.

Durham work is overwhelmingly renovation and demolition rather than new construction, and that changes which container you want. Dense debris hits weight limits long before it fills the box.

Durham has no landfill

This is the thing most people don't know about Durham waste, and it explains a lot about pricing. The city has no landfill of its own. Household waste goes through the City Waste Disposal and Recycling Center on East Club Boulevard and is then trucked roughly 90 miles east to a regional landfill.

Construction and demolition debris is a separate stream, and it mostly leaves the county too. Durham County publishes a courtesy list of C&D outlets, and almost all of them are in Wake County — Raleigh, Apex, Holly Springs, Wendell. There is essentially one in-county C&D option, on South Hoover Road.

None of that is a reason to pay more than you should. It is a reason to work with someone who already runs those routes rather than someone pricing the trip as an exception.

Permits and placement

Durham is the most explicit of any town we serve about dumpsters in the street, which is genuinely helpful. The city's Temporary Closure Permit covers, in its own words, temporary dumpsters and temporary closure of streets, sidewalks, on-street parking, or other portions of the right-of-way resulting from construction on adjacent private property.

It is handled by the Right of Way Management Group inside the Planning and Development Department, with Minor Development Engineering reviewing the submittal for completeness. Permit requests go to TemporaryClosures@DurhamNC.gov.

There is no line item called a dumpster fee. A container in the street is priced as whatever it occupies — a lane, a parking space, or a sidewalk. As of the fee schedule effective July 2025, that means a $130 per week administrative base fee plus daily charges: $73 per lane per day on a major thoroughfare, $21 on other streets, $28.60 per parking space, and $11 or $2 per day for sidewalk depending on the district. A container sitting entirely on your own driveway or lot is not covered by that permit. If you are unsure whether your placement crosses into the right-of-way, call Right of Way Management before the drop rather than after.

What we haul here

Durham's housing stock is old, and the city says so itself — its Neighborhood Compass notes that the oldest neighborhoods have average residential construction years in the 1920s and 30s, and flags that older stock needs greater repair and preservation work. Watts-Hillandale alone has 446 contributing buildings. That is bungalow renovation: plaster-and-lath demo, roof tear-offs, kitchen and bath gut jobs, whole-house cleanouts.

Downtown is the other half of it, and it is adaptive reuse rather than new build — gutting and rebuilding inside existing shells. Brightleaf District is around 220,000 square feet of it, Golden Belt Campus around 320,000. The Villages of Hayti broke ground in May 2026, an $85 million first phase with 252 affordable units on the former Fayette Place site.

A note on weight

Plaster, brick, tile, and shingles are dense. On a 1920s Durham renovation it is common to run out of weight allowance with a third of the container still empty, and overweight loads cost more than the size upgrade would have.
